Last Mountain Lake Stewardship Group Update – October 2017

June 2018 Update

Below is an article from the Wadena News Oct 2017 with a quote from MLA Scott Moe. They really do plan to move the Quill Lake Water thru Lake Kutawagan( salinity around 5,000mg/L) and Pells Lake( salinity around 10,000mg/L) into Last Mountain Lake (salinity of 1500mg/L.)

WSA promised us in Oct 2016 they would have 100 illegal ditches closed – to date ZERO have been closed. (WSA Media release July 2016). We know from the KGS report – 38 % of the Quill Lake rise is from drainage. Please see below the illegal ditch that was dug this fall and will drain into the Quill Lakes next spring. An example of illegal drainage that is adding to the water level in Quill Lake. How can we help them if they don’t help themselves?

We have also just learned that the Ministry of Environment have decided an Environmental Impact Assessment is not required. The ditching can begin as early as next month pending certain terms and conditions.

Please distribute this information to all residents, either via email, website, whatever distribution system you have available. We ask that residents send emails, phone calls, or letters to their MLA and MP, Water Security and Minister of Environment, objecting to such a reckless plan. For example: “Can the government assure us that moving this water, through Kutawagan and Pell, along highly fertilized farmland will not create an environmental disaster for our fish and our fresh water, and will not create an economic disaster for Saskatchewan?”

Thank you.
